Ashley. Yep, that’s my name. Along with about a million other girls, and even a guy or two.

I used to hate my name. It’s a lovely name, but it made me feel…one in a million. And not in a good way.

I can’t tell you how many Ashleys I know or have come across. There were so many other ones growing up, that I didn’t even respond when someone called unless I recognized the voice. Yeah.

Really, I’ve felt like that—one in a million—in one way or another all my life.

Boring. Mundane. Not quite good enough.

Have you ever felt that way? If so, you’re in the right place. Keep reading.

I’ve learned a lot about identity in the last few years. More than in a head kind of way. I’ve learned in a heart kind of way that I’m not a ‘one in a million’ person. None of us is.

Luke 12:6-7 says God sees and cares when a sparrow falls.

Not a sparrow falls that the Father doesn't see. Luke 12:6-7 | HISsparrowBlog

Now the sparrow is small, chunky, drab-looking, and usually only lives about 5 years. But God cares for it, and His eye is on each one—what many of us would consider the least.

Just think how much He loves us if He cares that much for the tiny sparrow. Let me tell you: a lot.

And here’s what else I’ve learned:

  • When we feel plain like the sparrow, God says we’re His works of art.
  • When we feel tiny and insignificant like the sparrow, God says we meant enough to Him that He sent His beautiful, precious Son to die for our place with Him forever.
  • When we feel unloved like the sparrow, God says He looks forward to our wonder when we walk with Him on the other side.

I don’t mind my name so much anymore, because when Jesus calls me, I know I’m anything but one in a million.

And one day He’ll tell me what my name is, the one only He knows.

To the one who overcomes... I'll give a white stone with a new name written on it that no one else knows. Revelation 2:17 NASB | HISsparrowBlog

God will give you a special name too if you’ve accepted Jesus as your Savior. If you haven’t, God’s arms are open. I urge you to read my page Weary Sparrow.

I’m so glad you’re here. I look forward to exploring identity through grace with you and learning how we can be a blessing to others.
